Daily Bowl

Daily Bowl is a non-profit cofounded by former Union City coffee shop owner Paddy Iyer and community member Lance Nishihira. It aims to rescue perfectly edible food destined for the waste stream and delivering it to agencies that feed people who are hungry. Since its founding in 2016, it has rescued tens of thousands of pounds of food from retailers, restaurants and institutional kitchens. Even though Alameda County is near the country’s economic epicenter of Silicon Valley, 20% of our students don’t know where their next meal is coming from. In addition to taking a bite out of food insecurity, Daily Bowl also reduces the environmental impact of food waste by curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste that gets buried in landfills decomposes without oxygen and creates methane, which is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide at heating our atmosphere. Through our short history, we’ve had plenty of ups and downs but in spite of it all, we are committed to serving our community. As we uncover our path to sustainability, we look forward to building bridges with you all, so we can put an end to this needless waste. Thank you so much for your consideration!
