Timaru Riding For The Disabled

Founded in 1972, Timaru RDA is one of 55 groups affiliated to NZRDA. We purchased our ten-acre property in 2005 and currently have four riding sessions and 30 riders each week. Our riders include both physically and intellectually challenged people as well as those who have behavioral issues or have suffered trauma. Riders are referred by various agencies including health professionals, schools and social services as well as self- referrals. Horse riding enables riders to participate in physical and social activities that they are often excluded from. Relationships formed with our horses and volunteers can lead to increased confidence, self- esteem and independence. Horse riding at Timaru RDA includes therapeutic, educational and recreational programs. We have eight horses ranging in age from 10 to 27 years. They are cared for each day by a dedicated team. Volunteers are crucial to our operations. We have 50 wonderful volunteers supporting us at riding sessions, doing general maintenance, and fund-raising including making 1,400 dozen cheese rolls. All our volunteers receive regular training and riding sessions are lead by NZRDA trained coaches.
We rely wholly on fundraising, donations and grants. Each horse costs approximately $2,000 in feed, and farrier, dental and medical care every year.
