Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc.

Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. (DVSS) has empowered victims and their families to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing shelter and on-going support services, as well as prevention initiatives for over 32-years. Our direct services include, but are not limited to emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis intervention, advocacy, material assistance, criminal justice system accompaniment, children’s programs, and support groups. We also continue to provide specialized programs and engage in significant outreach to underserved populations and design unique programs to identify victims we are not reaching. In addition to providing direct services for victims, we participate in numerous education/prevention programs and outreach events for the community. We are the only Domestic Violence agency in New Hanover County. In 2017, we provided direct services for 1,384 domestic violence victims and their children.  Additionally, we sheltered 168 adults and 90 children—for 6,444 service days in the Shelter. The Shelter facility (in a confidential location) provides a refuge for victims fleeing violence.
