Adult Literacy Program

Since 1981, ALPS has adhered to its mission of providing rigorous instruction for adults designed to enhance the skills necessary for success in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, civics, and English language acquisition needed for today’s workforce. We introduce adult learners to the necessary skills to become self-sufficient, productive, and technologically competent workers within our community. Our highly qualified instructors lead students to succeed in completing their high school equivalency and pursue a postsecondary education and career pathway. ALPS continues to be a reliable, collaborative community partner for Adult Education Services throughout Yuma County with face-to- face/hybrid and online distance learning platforms. The need for adult education in our region is clearly evident with 27% of residents 18+ not having a high school credential, 28% of 16-19 year olds not enrolled in school, and not having a high school credential. 10% of area residents 18+ live in “linguistically isolated” households. From an economic perspective, basic skills deficient adults are 2x more likely to be unemployed, 3x more likely to be in poverty, 4x more likely to be in poor health and 8x more likely to be incarcerated. ALPS effectively meets this population’s need.
