Literacy Volunteers of America
LVA-PW is an award-winning adult literacy non-profit that has significantly impacted the lives of over 8,500 adults and 35,000 family members over the last 27 years. Our mission is to teach adults the life-changing skills of reading, writing, and speaking English that will enable them to participate and prosper in our society. LVA-PW serves over 700 adults each year with over 220 certified volunteer tutors offering classroom and individual instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL), Conversation, GED preparation, Civics and Citizenship, Computer classes, Job Readiness (regular and professional levels), and Confidence Courses. Classes are offered throughout the county and includes innovative collaborations with local government, charitable organizations, and private sector partners. Our adults (96%) are second language learners, living below the poverty level, from over 100 countries who need basic to advanced life-skills English to support their families, help their children succeed in school and become self-sufficient, with a 30% increase in refugee families in the past two years. Our adopted motto sums it up: “to the world, you might be one person, but to one person, you just might be the world”; to the thousands we have served, and to their families, we are the world.
