The Charities
Debbie’s mother was Viola Blythe, who was very much a good Samaritan. Viola began giving food and clothing to people in need in 1946. Debbie’s home was the “SHELTER” where people could eat, sleep, shower, and talk to Viola. They would prepare food boxes, clean up used toys, and Viola even went the extra mile to sew clothes and launder them. It was not unusual to come home from school with two to three families that needed a place to sleep. In 1989 Debbie’s father thought it was time to stop having people stay in their home. Viola was so compassionate, and becoming an orphan at age 4, she couldn’t let go. It was at that point that the City of Newark stepped in and provided a building that enabled Viola to continue her work. In the meantime, Debbie has worked at the Viola Blythe Center for 29 years now and is currently the Executive Director. Viola unfortunately passed away in 2002, but because of her love for others, and the passion she passed on to her daughter Debbie, the Viola Blythe Center continues to help thousands of men, women, and children with Food, Clothing, baby items, new shoes.
Serra Center’s mission is to provide dignity, respect & choice to persons with developmental disabilities. We have three main programs: RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES: Four residential care homes in Fremont providing an optimum environment for the training, recreation, and socialization that each client chooses. Our dedicated team works with each client and their family to develop a personal care plan that provides medical and support care needs, and promotes individual choice, goals, and dreams. Care is 24/7 with a 3-1 client/staff ratio. SUPPORTED LIVING SERVICES: Provides a broad range of services to people living in the home of their choice, ranging from personal attendant care to daily activity assistance. Services are designed around the needs and wishes of each client. We maintain a 24-hour emergency assistance system. INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICES: Provides daily life-skills training and support, so that the client leads the most self-determined life possible. Throughout all of these 3 programs, we also provide counseling and behavioral health services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Our success is measured by our clients’ health, happiness, and longevity in our care
The non-profit, volunteer run Frank Bette Center for the Arts is housed in the turn-of-the-century Victorian at 1601 Paru Street at Lincoln Avenue in Alameda, California. Benefactor Frank Bette was a master antique furniture restorer artist and author. Upon his death in 1999 at the age of 99, he bequeathed the house as “a place for meetings, readings, showings, and other creative doings.” Today, our mission is to build upon Frank’s dream. Artists, art lovers, and collectors are encouraged to view this year’s schedule and to get involved in: Art Exhibits: There is always something fresh and new in the Center’s Main and Signature Galleries plus two satellite galleries in the community, including rotating group and solo shows that present fine arts and crafts, jewelry and textile arts, sculpture, paintings, photography and various modes of literary, music, and mixed media arts. Classes: in a variety of media. Programs: Poetry, Music, life drawing, speaker series.
