North Valley Caring Services
The mission of North Valley Caring Services is to empower neighborhood residents to build a vision of their community’s future and to actively engage in solving local problems. We serve our community through outreach, education, and support services for low-income and homeless neighbors. We meet our neighbors’ most pressing needs while helping them to move out of the cycle of poverty and homelessness through education, workforce development, case management, and wraparound services. A large number of those served live in the agency’s immediate community, known as the Langdon/Orion Street neighborhood. The Langdon/Orion neighborhood is characterized by gang activity, immigration raids, poverty, homelessness, and is one of the poorest communities in Los Angeles County. According to the 2010 US Census, 48% of local families live below poverty level, the average household size is 4.2 people (compared to the LA City average of 2.8 people), 46% of the adults have less than a 9th grade education, and the median earnings for those aged 25 and older is only $17,277. Because of the low-income nature of the community, prostitution and gang activity are both prevalent. A gang injunction has been in effect in our immediate neighborhood since 1999. Each year, our programs serve more than 4,000 homeless and at-risk neighbors.
