Our Story
Womenspace’s mission is to prevent domestic violence in intimate partner relationships and support survivors in claiming personal power. As Lane County’s population grows, so does the number of domestic violence incidents. Last year, 680 domestic violence charges were filed by the Lane County District Attorney’s Office. In 2017, Womenspace served 3,800 adults and 2,600 children. Although people experiencing domestic violence face multiple obstacles, for victims contemplating leaving abusive partners, Lane County’s lack of affordable housing can deter them from escaping those dangerous situations. Many victims must choose between staying with their abusers or risk uncertain situations on the streets. For more than 40 years, Womenspace has provided safety, hope and healing for people of all genders in Lane County. The nonprofit operates a shelter, a 24-hour crisis line and provides youth, rural and legal advocates as well as education prevention programs and support groups. Womenspace has seen a 20 percent increase in services accessed in the last two years.
