Our Story
“Since its founding in 1967, SSCM has provided vital services to low-income Maryland residents with limited English proficiency, ensuring their equal participation in society. Many of our clients are recent immigrants and speak Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic or Russian. Each year, our dedicated staff and volunteer attorneys serve more than 8,000 residents of Maryland and greater Washington. After 50 years of operating from our Silver Spring office in Montgomery County, in July 2017 we opened a second office, in the City of Frederick, to address the critical need for our services. This office is open 38 hours per week, including the first Saturday of each month. Residents may call or come to our office without an appointment to receive a wide range of services and referrals related to nutrition, health care, education, housing, employment, and immigration. There is never a fee to meet with our case managers or attorneys, regardless of the number of visits or questions asked. SSCM only charges for specialized services, such as petitions and adjustments that include at least five applications with numerous pages, translations, employment verification and required evidence. Charges for these types of specialized services are approximately 25% of fees charged by area attorneys. “
