Our Story

San Mar Children’s Home is a Boonsboro, Maryland nonprofit serving the local area with a mission of “Cultivating Hope and Well-Being in Children, Families, and Communities.” Our vision is that children are safe and nurtured, families are strong and resilient, and communities are connected and thriving so that achieving dreams is possible. Founded as an orphanage in 1883, San Mar has been in continuous operation for almost 140 years. The way we provide services has changed over time as community needs have changed, but our commitment and focus remain to keep children safe and families supported. Today, our program priorities are Treatment Foster Care- providing care for children who cannot safely remain in their homes due to neglect, abuse, behavioral issues or due to family circumstances. The Jack E. Barr Center for Well-Being- responding to significant family mental health needs with outpatient services from licensed therapists and psychiatric supports. Bester Community of Hope- proactively supporting families with essential in-home services, free after-school, and healthcare programs along with efforts to strengthen neighborhoods so kids have their needs met while remaining in their home and community. The goal is prevention!
