Our Story

Fifty years ago, ACTS’ founders began by addressing the most basic human needs of food and shelter. They established Prince William County’s first food bank, set up a used furniture distribution system, and developed a homeless shelter in local churches. From these beginnings grew the Hunger Prevention Center, Thrift Store, utility assistance program, two homeless shelters, and a permanent housing program. As the community grew, ACTS’ services expanded to meet other needs of residents. In addition to hunger and homelessness, services now also include comprehensive prevention and intervention programs to address domestic violence, sexual abuse and assault, and suicide. In addition, ACTS Helpline provides a 24-hour anonymous crisis telephone service, as well as resource referrals, to over 4,000 individuals every month. Today, each program addresses the mission of ACTS: to foster hope, provide relief, and promote self-sufficiency for our Prince William area neighbors in crisis.
